Quick facts about Canada
Canada is the second largest country in the world in total land area, with a population of just over 38 million. It has two official languages, English and French. It is formed of 10 provinces and 3 territories. Canada ranks in the top 10 countries in the world for Human Development and per capita income. Ottawa is its capital and its largest cities are Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Canada is one of the favorite destinations for immigration due to the high quality of life and its well established immigration system.

Most foreign nationals need to first obtain a temporary residence permit in order to stay in Canada. There are different types of visas available, including, visitor, student, temporary worker, business visitor, parent and grandparent supervisa. Certain temporary statuses can also be part of a pathway towards permanent residence in Canada. It is illegal to overstay a temporary permit or to work or study without authorization, one who does those things is subject to removal from Canada.

- There are three basic main streams of immigration to Canada from where all programs derive:
- Family reunification (sponsorship);
- Economic immigration, including all Provincial Nomination Programs;
- Refugee and asylum.
Canada has very strict rules about immigration, and in order to qualify, a foreign national must meet all admissibility requirements as well as the minimum criteria set out in one of the immigration streams.
Permanent residency in Canada can be obtained through many different programs designed by the Federal and Provincial Governments, and as a Permanent Resident, one has all the basic rights as a Canadian citizen, with the exception of those who commit serious crimes and crimes against the nation. Permanent Residency can be revoked in certain circumstances and it can also be renounced. A Permanent Resident also has the opportunity to sponsor family members to Canada and to become a Canadian citizen.
Becoming a Canadian Citizen
An eligible Permanent Resident may apply for Canadian Citizenship if they fulfill the requirements for time spent in the country, official language ability, tax situation, and knowledge of history and culture.

- In order to obtain temporary status one may apply for:
- A visitor visa;
- An electronic travel authorization (eTA);
- A super visa;
- A study permit;
- A work permit.
In certain situations one may be able to visit, study or work without a permit.
Study and work permits can be open or very specific, and its crucial to comply with the restrictions imposed in order to maintain legal status in Canada.

The economic immigration streams include:
- Federal Skilled Workers;
- Federal Skilled Trades Program;
- Canadian Experience Class;
- Start-Up Visa;
- Investors;
- Self-employed persons;
- Provincial Nominee Programs.
Since Jan 1, 2015, the applications under the federal economic categories are processed through a system called Express Entry. All candidates receive points for the information they provide on their profile, and the highest scoring candidates are invited to apply for immigration under one of the streams. In order to be successful, the candidates must also meet all criteria in the stream they are applying for. Express Entry is not available in the province of Québec at the moment, although work and study experience in that province counts towards an Express Entry profile.

The current PNP programs available are:

- New Brunswick
- Prince Edward Island
- Alberta
- Manitoba
- Saskatchewan
- Northwest Territories
- Yukon
The immigration streams available in each province are regulated by the provinces according to economical and labour needs. A possible applicant can apply for immigration directly to a province or through Express Entry, possibly receiving an invitation to immigrate.
The province of Québec has its own set of immigration rules and applications are made to the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Diversité et de l'Inclusion Québec.

Canada believes in family reunification, and because of that, a Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen can sponsor a family member in the following situations:
- Spouse, common law or conjugal partner;
- A child or dependent children;
- Parents and grandparents;
- Other relatives in specific circumstances.
Both sponsor and principal applicant must meet the criteria set out in the Canadian legislation and abide by the rules of the sponsorship agreement.

Canada believes in humanitarian assistance to those in need around the world by offering refugee status and resettlement. Those who find themselves in need of protection or being persecuted, are able to seek asylum in Canada.
Our refugee system has two main parts:
- the Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program, for people seeking protection from outside Canada; and
- the In-Canada Asylum Program for people making refugee protection claims from within Canada.
